Heart Disease:
The #1 Killer in America…
But You Don’t Have to be a Statistic

Heart disease is the number one killer in America, and for over eighty years the medical community has blamed cholesterol for the heart disease epidemic. How then, do medical researchers explain why the French, who have a diet high in cholesterol-packed foods, and the native peoples of Greenland, whose diet consists mainly of animal fat, rarely suffer from heart attacks?

It was this question that, in 1968, led a young medical doctor, and avid researcher named Kilmer McCully to begin to question the prevailing theory that heightened cholesterol levels cause arteriosclerosis.

Dr. McCully was amazed when his analysis of heart related deaths proved that the amino acid called homocysteine was causing arteriosclerosis by directly damaging the cells and tissues of the arteries.

And even more exciting was his realization that one case resulted from a Vitamin B-6 deficiency, and the other from a lack of B-12 and Folic Acid, which led to his discovery that a high level of homocysteine in the blood was definitely the factor responsible for these deaths, and that the B Vitamins had direct control over the levels of homocysteine in the blood.

By 1969, Dr. McCully was ready to propose his homocysteine and the heart theory to his medical colleagues. Here, in his own words, is what he reported:

“When there is too much homocysteine in the blood, arteries are damaged and plaques form. The result is arteriosclerosis and heart disease. This happens when we don’t get enough of certain vitamins – namely B-6, B-12 and Folic Acid. These B Vitamins are missing in our diets because processing and refining foods (think white flour, sugar, and canning) destroys these sensitive vitamins.”

The Truth About Cholesterol

But what about cholesterol – why are elevated levels of cholesterol associated with increased risk of heart attacks if homocysteine is really to blame? By the 1970s, cholesterol was the reigning king of heart disease. The medical establishment, government agencies and the pharmaceutical companies were all heavily invested in the cholesterol theory, and very unwilling to consider obscure new theories.

Even when Dr. McCully was able to demonstrate that oxy-cholesterol (cholesterol with extra oxygen atoms) was the true cholesterol danger, and that homocysteine was responsible for manufacturing oxy-cholesterol within the body, medical science was unwilling to consider the validity of his findings.

His theory went largely unnoticed and uninvestigated despite, and perhaps because, the reversal of high homocysteine levels in the blood does not require expensive drugs, unusual eating programs or complicated medically supervised procedures.

All it requires is a diet rich in whole foods and an increased consumption of common B Vitamins.

Now, over 30 years later, Kilmer McCully is honored as the “Father of Homocysteine Theory” as new studies reporting the homocysteine/Heart disease link are reported monthly.
